Makes a gourmet conversation piece when presented sliced and cleverly sprinkled with black sesame seeds. 'Mantanghong' is the most popular of the Chinese "beauty heart" radishes. This summer/fall-sown radish produces large, 3" round, mild radishes that can weigh up to 1 pound each! This mild radish is white with green shoulders, and a vivid, fuchsia interior. Also called ‘red meat’ radish, this winter radish keeps its flavor and consistency longer in the ground, resulting in a longer harvest period. Also called Watermelon radish. 50-60 days.
~ planting ~
When to sow outside: RECOMMENDED. 8 to 10 weeks before first fall frost, and 2 to 3 successive sowings every 10 days. In mild winter climates, successive sowings can be continued until temperatures are too cold for germination. Plant the radish seeds in very rich, deeply worked up soil about 1/2" deep and 1" apart; later, thin the seedlings 4-6" apart. When to start inside: Not recommended.
Radishes do well with consistently moist soil and the addition of organic matter such as compost. Do not allow the soil to dry out, but also avoid overwatering as this can cause splitting.
~ harvesting ~
Harvest in late fall or early winter before ground freezes. Harvest at a tiny size for hors d’oeuvres or large for cooking. Watermelon radishes can be harvested at any time up to their mature size of 3". The flavor is sweet and crisp; they also store well for the winter.
