~ Sowing ~

To break its dormancy, this seed needs a period of cold moisture, a period of warm moisture, followed by another period of cold moisture. Mix the seed with moist sand and store it in the refrigerator for 60 days, then move it to a 70-75 degrees F location for 30-60 days, followed by another 30-60 day period in the refrigerator before planting. To accomplish this naturally, simply plant the seed in late fall and wait until the second spring after planting for germination. To start the treated seed indoors, plant Angelica seeds in trays just under the surface of the soil, since they need light to germinate. The germination rate of this seed is naturally low, and the seeds will be slow to sprout.

Sowing: Sow seeds on the surface of the soil and lightly press them in. Do not cover the seeds, as they need light to germinate.

Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

Light and Temperature: Place the seed trays in a bright, cool area with temperatures around 55-65°F (13-18°C). Use a grow light if necessary.

Germination: Seeds typically germinate within 2-4 weeks, but germination can be slow and erratic.

~ Transplanting Seedlings Outdoors ~

Timing: Transplant seedlings outdoors after the risk of frost has passed and the soil is warm.

Location: Choose a site with moist, well-drained soil and full sun to partial shade.

Spacing: Space plants 2-3 feet apart to allow for adequate growth.

Transplanting: Gently transplant seedlings into prepared soil, taking care not to disturb the roots. Water well after planting.

~ Growing ~

This plant grows best in full sun or dappled shade and moist soil, preferably near water. It reaches its full size in its second year of growth, and often doesn't bloom until its third year. Though the foliage dies back in winter, it survives cold weather well. If grown for its roots, the quality and size will be improved by pruning off the flower heads; this also lengthens the life of the plant, since it dies after producing seed. This plant reproduces itself by side shoots, but does not spread aggressively.

Watering: Ensure the soil remains consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Water deeply and regularly, particularly during the plant's active growth phase.

Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer or compost in early spring to support growth. Avoid over-fertilization, as this can lead to excessive foliage at the expense of flower development.

Pest and Disease Management: Angelica is generally pest-resistant. However, it can be susceptible to aphids and fungal diseases. Monitor plants regularly and treat any infestations promptly with organic or chemical controls as appropriate.

Maintenance: Prune spent flower heads to encourage new growth and prevent self-seeding if desired. In colder climates, consider mulching around the base of the plant in late fall to protect the roots from freezing.

~ Harvesting ~

When to Harvest: The best time to harvest is in the second year, just as the flowers are about to bloom. This is when the plant's properties are believed to be at their peak.

How to Harvest: Use sharp scissors or pruning shears to cut the stems and leaves. The roots can also be harvested.

Drying and Storing: Spread the harvested parts on a clean, dry surface in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. Once fully dried, store the herbs in an airtight container in a cool, dark place.

~ Seed Saving ~

Allow the seed heads to dry on the plant. Once dry, cut the heads and shake them over a container to collect the seeds. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place for future planting.

~ Additional Information ~

Forage for Pollinators: Angelica is highly attractive to a variety of pollinators, including bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects. The plant's large, umbrella-shaped flower clusters provide an abundant source of nectar.

Origin: Native to North America, Angelica is typically found in moist environments such as marshes, stream banks, and wet meadows.

Nomenclature: The genus name "Angelica" is derived from the Greek word for "angel," which reflects the plant's long-standing herbal use.

Climate Adaptability: Angelica is well-suited to temperate climates and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. It is particularly well-adapted to wet soils, making it an excellent choice for gardens with moist or waterlogged areas.
